Righteous among the Nations-part 2

Many rescuers helped Jews get out of a zone of special danger in order to escape to a less dangerous location.
Many parents were faced with agonizing dilemmas to separate from their children and give them away in the hope of increasing their chances of survival. In some cases children who were left alone after their parents had been killed would be taken in by families or convents.

To be recognized as Righteous among the Nations, a person has to fulfill several criteria:
• Only a Jewish party can put a nomination .
• Helping a family member or a Jewish person convert to Christianity is not a criterion for recognition.
• The assistance has to be repeated and substantial
• The assistance has to be given without any financial gain expected in return .

A person who is recognized as “Righteous among the Nations” for having taken risks to help Jews during the Holocaust is awarded a medal in his name, a certificate of honor and the privilege of having the name added to those on the Wall of Honor in the avenue of the Righteous at Yad Vashem .

One of the most famous Righteous among the Nations is Oskar Schindler. Schindler saved over 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his enamelware and ammunitions factories.
